BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Fest™ is a three-day immersive live experience that celebrates, empowers, and elevates women and girls of color. Inspired by the popular BLACK GIRLS ROCK!™ Awards, BGR! FEST™ brings renowned women musicians, thought-leaders, and creative innovators to the DMV during International Women’s Day Weekend March 8 - 10th. This inaugural edition of BGR! FEST™ at The Kennedy Center includes concerts, panel discussions, book signings, and free community events.

LINEUP

BGR! FEST™ at the Kennedy Center features GRAMMY®–nominated singer Jazmine Sullivan, DC’s own Maimouna Youssef (“Mumu Fresh”) and a Surprise Guest in concert. Other highlights include a FREE Welcome Party hosted by DJ’s MC Lyte and BLACK GIRLS ROCK!™ CEO and Founder Beverly Bond. Plus intimate conversations with Beverly Bond and celebrity guests inspired by her book BLACK GIRLS ROCK!™: Owning Our Magic. Rocking Our Truth.

jazmine sullivan

In 2008, Jazmine Sullivan released her debut album Fearless, which featured the chart-topping hit singles “Need You Bad” and “Bust Your Windows” and earned the Philly native an amazing seven Grammy nominations including Best New Artist. Jazmine released her second album, the critically acclaimed Love Me Back in 2010, of which the Associated Press declared as “something amazing” and consequently garnered her an eighth Grammy nomination for “Holding You Down (Goin’ In Circles).” The recipient of Billboard’s Rising Star Award, Jazmine released her third album Reality Show in 2015 which she executive produced and served as the primary songwriter tackling the realities of love, life and everything in between.

maimouna Youssef (“MUMU FRESH”)

Maimouna Youssef a.k.a Mumu Fresh is a Grammy-Nominated Afro-Native Singer, Songwriter, MC, Activist, Edu-tainer, who has performed worldwide with music giants such as Oscar award winner, Common, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’s Band, The Roots, Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Erykah Badu, Femi Kuti, DJ Jazzy Jeff , Ed Sheeran, Nas, the NSO and Dave Chappelle among others. Maimouna reached viral attention worldwide when she performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk with the group August Greene. You may also recognize her voice from Ford’s commercial “Roll On” celebrating women of color. The songstress has six independent projects to her credit including a 2017 album entitled “Vintage Babies” produced by DJ Dummy.

mC LYTE

Lyricist, inspirational speaker, DJ, actress, pioneer, icon, veteran and entrepreneur describe one of the most prolific and well-respected female Hip Hop artists of all time: MC Lyte. She has consistently found ways to reinvent herself musically, while expanding her resume and gaining new fans. A pioneer in the industry, she is the FIRST female artist to perform Hip Hop at the White House; FIRST rap artist ever to perform at the historic Carnegie Hall; the FIRST female rapper to receive a gold single; the FIRST female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy; and the FIRST solo female rapper to be honored/inducted on VH-1’s “Hip Hop Honors”. MC Lyte has also been the voice behind the VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors”, and the “BET Awards”. Lyte has recurring roles in “SWAT”, “Queen Of The South”, and Starz’s “Power”.

 

BEVERLY BOND

Beverly Bond is a women’s empowerment leader, entrepreneur, mentor, philanthropist, celebrity DJ, cultural curator and social innovator. In 2006, Bond founded BLACK GIRLS ROCK! and created the annual BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards to celebrate the excellence and dynamic accomplishments of Black women across sectors. Bond’s work as a businesswoman and community leader has earned her prestigious accolades and recognition, from being included on Ebony magazine’s Power 100 list of most influential Blacks in America, two Gracie Awards, and three NAACP Image Awards and beyond. In 2018, Bond released her first book BLACK GIRLS ROCK!: Owning Our Magic, Rocking Our Truth published by Simon & Schuster. She interviewed and featured over 40 powerhouse women including Michelle Obama, Susan Taylor, Rihanna, Solange Knowles, Angela Davis, Mary J.Blige, Yara Shahidi and many more.
